Ignorance Threatens Animal Welfare

(Above) As with most types of injustice and trauma, the first thing affected is the brain. As women place constrictions on themselves about how they should speak and act, they fight against the part of themselves that sees themselves as equal to both men, but also other women. Furthermore, the contradictions placed on women add a layer of complexity. In young women particularly, as they see how different women act in scenarios, both parties second guess their choices, not realizing that they are trying meet a standard that is difficult to fit within. This causes a lack of self-confidence and heighted anxienty, which can lead to even more consequences.

(Above) So much of the modern world is visual. Poetry doesn’t have to come through just black and white letters on a page; it can dance in swirls and color too. Through this poetry collage, there can be seen contemperorary poets such as Ocean Vuong and Louise Glück. There are 19th and 20th century poets such as Maya Angelou and Emily Dickinson. And of course, there is the newest brand of one-line poetry popularized by Atticus, a pseudonym for a poet who remains anonymous. There is still a whole world of poets and poetry to explore beyond the frames of this one collective photograph. The following list of additional poets I would personally recommend is by no means comprehensive: K-Ming Chang, Ross Gay, Hanif Abdurraqib, Victoria Chang, Sonia Sanchez, Sylvia Plath, T.S. Eliot, Percy Shelley, and William Wordsworth.

(Above) Double standards exist beyond gender roles. A wonderful resource about this topic is the blog Modcast, where English Literature and Language graduate students discuss various novels. In fact, the blog has a section called “Hypocritcisms: Double Standards in Literature,” which is dedicated to various types of conflicting ideals faced by people from all communities. This goes to shows that despite the wonderful steps made to equalize things for various groups, conversations are still happening and progress must continue.

(Above) The cosmetic industry plays a significant role in fueling ageism by perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards and promoting products that promise to reverse or prevent the signs of aging. Many companies within this industry capitalize on societys obsession with youth, often employing marketing tactics that reinforce ageist stereotypes. For instance, beauty brands like LOréal have come under scrutiny for campaigns that seemingly celebrate older women but still emphasize their products anti-aging properties. Similarly, companies like Estée Lauder market their products with phrases like turn back the clock and age-defying, further contributing to the notion that aging is something to be feared and avoided at all costs. Like plastic surgery, topical remedies for aging won’t transform you. Billion-dollar companies aren’t dedicated to making the world look younger. They’re preying on easy insecurities, and we fall for it every time. In 2021, the global anti-aging market was estimated to be worth about 62.6 billion U.S. dollars according to Statistica, and this number is expected to increase significantly in the next few years.

My initial thought was that it was a fantastic example of an edge or satellite city, a whole new city center popping up orbiting Downtown Orlando, explained Mr. Nathan Johnston. Viewers from out of state immediately noticed the skyscraper in the middle of a suburb. Why did they decide on that location?

(Above) Despite Orlando’s heat, the biggest asset of the city for the marathroners was how flat the course was. Athletes began right off of Amelia Avenue with a 2.2 mile loop through the business district, did three 8.8 miles loops through the Milk District, and finished at Lake Eola. The run included long, flat, straight stretches which gave athletes a more even playing field.

Because of the range of flavors that hit your taste buds from the cold sauce, raw fish, sticky rice, and more, it is one of my favorite types of foods to eat. At the Green Coast Resort, located in Albania, this is one of the dishes they serve. From Turkish and American to Albanian and Japanese, these offered cuisines are high in quality, and indescribable in taste.

Being a wrestler is a lifestyle of dedication and commitment, and it doesn’t come easy. “Traveling, making weight, competing, doing homework at the airport during a delayed flight, getting back Monday morning at 1:00 A.M., and then showing up to school the same day. It’s a grind,” Omer Barak, grade 12 said. Yet, he loves the sport because of the, “Sacrifice it entails, and the dedication…and the hard work you put in shows. There’s no hiding.” This hard-won relationship of devotion is clearly echoed throughout the team. Yes, it’s hard, but that’s exactly what wrestlers love about it. In this spirit, it becomes more than just wrestling. It’s tackling and growing from valuable life lessons.

The culture is very diverse in Turkey as is the cuisine–we have our own recipes, but they are all heavily influenced by tradition.” The appetizer dishes ordered along with Turkish Coffee adding on to the mood. The coffee itself is an experience as it is the definition of a traditional Turkish coffee.

(Above) The Regal Movie Theater in Oviedo Mall is a local staple whenever the latest movies drop, especially during the summer season when locals need a break from the scorching hot sun. Before COVID-19, the theater was mildly busy, and ever since the end of the pandemic, the theater has not regained that popularity. The best time to go to the Regal Movie Theater in Oviedo Mall is Tuesdays since that is when they have the best deals on ticket prices and popcorn. Shoppers can pair their day with a movie and snack to enhance their experience at Oviedo Mall. In the past, the Oviedo Mall has offered rental space on Sundays for local church groups such as the Palmwood Church. Growing up around the Oviedo Mall my entire life has given me more than a decade to form my opinion on the movie theater. Although the theater has not gotten many updates, it remains to have great service, great snacks, great drinks, comfortable seats, the movies we are excited to see, and good memories are always made.

(Above) Sitting down at the beautiful La Piazza del Villaggio Ristorante there is an incredible view of the mountains and buildings all around. This Italian restaurant is located in Telluride, Colorado. Inside there is a variety of well-made Italian foods where it is so clear that they put so much effort into every dish. The food is so good that it tastes like it’s from Italy. The servers and the staff are all so welcoming and kind it makes guests want to come back. It is open from lunch to dinner and is an easy place if you need a place to eat during a long day of skiing. Above the restaurant there is a gondola which brings residents and visitors into town, shops, and so much more.

(Above) The inspiration that Star Wars took from Dune is so clear after watching the film. There is the first obvious parallel between the countless desert planets of the George Lucas films, most famously Anakin Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine and Dune’s desert planet of Arrakis. Then there’s the advanced physical and psychological manipulation capabilities of the Bene Gesserit, a skill they call “the Voice that mirrors the body and mind control called “the Force” that Jedis possess. Both have evil emperors ruling the galaxy, strong brother-sister ties at the center of their stories, and a powerful drug called “the spice” as a popular commodity. There are also tremendous differences. While Star Wars mainly focuses on smugglers and rebels, Dune is a story about feudal aristocracy. It dives into the complex questions of using religion as a tool for politics and the limits of human capability. Star Wars, on the other hand, can seem more like a fairy tale in comparison. It has a greater emphasis on spirituality, with Luke saving the galaxy by saving his father’s soul, and in this vein, it is fundamentally more optimistic.

Manager Mehr Ohri, grade 10, who has only just become a basketball manager this year, says, “My favorite part of being a manager for the basketball team is getting to sit on the bench and watch the home games, especially the ones that we win.” Mehr along with her fellow managers help the players throughout the game by handing out water as well.

This term does not have to be checked or verified by the USDA at all, making it just another insignificant word that gets slapped on packaging for the illusion of health.

While choosing which wrist to wear the jade bracelet is mostly up to preference, some would recommend the left wrist due to its proximity to the heart. Jade bangles, besides being naturally beautiful, are thought to have many emotional and spiritual benefits. The cool weight of it brings one’s mind to focus on the tranquility of the stone on the skin and creates a peaceful state of mind. It is also believed to attract good fortune to the wearer. Strenuous labor to craft this exquisite gem is part of a long and prized traditional culture. The gemstone’s symbolism of virtue, purity, and eternity is something that is cherished in Chinese tradition. As such, receiving jade as an engagement ring has been gaining more and more popularity.

(Above) One of the volunteers at E.S.T.H.E.R. taught a Highlander how to correctly fill the pantries up for the mothers to receive later on in the week. Later everyone joined in to help with the food. After this section of the activities, everybody moved to the second room where the volunteers made paper flowers to attach to the goodie bags, which include a variety of snack for the children. These bags included a variety of snacks to cheer them up, including chips, cookies, and more. When the children receive these bags, they give hope and comfort that some of them dont get to experience too often. This is why E.S.T.H.E.R. wants every task performed to a volunteers best effort.

(Above) As simple as it may seem, the origination of the name “pho” is actually more complicated and uncertain than most may think. It is debated that the name actually stems from French vocabulary, as “feu” in French means fire, and this word is used in the name of a French beef stew called “pot-au-feu.” As well as Pho, this is also a dish consisting of broth, beef, and vegetables. Seeing as the French colonized Vietnam starting in the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, the theory isn’t completely unbelievable. Other people argue that the name “pho” came from the name of a different brothy dish that Cantonese street vendors sold in Vietnam called “nguu nhục phấn,” which means, “Beef with rice noodles.” It is thought that the name became more and more shortened and simplified over time, at one point turning in to “phấn”, and eventually resulting in the simple name of “pho.”

The opening shot of Willy Wonka sailing into town was filmed in Lyme Regis, Dorset, a place inspired by Meryl Streep’s 1981 romance, The French Lieutenant’s Woman. However, to get the non-descript European city scenes, production had to build the sets from scratch. Head production designer, Nathan Crowley noted, “You conclude that you kind of want to build your own place because you’re trying to achieve, as I call it, ‘Roald Dahl realism,’ which is fantasy but on all his terms.”

Serena Young is the Director of Photography of Lake Highland Preparatory School's Upper School newspaper Twice-Told Tale, a publication ranked first in the nation by American Scholastic Press Association. Young is the Co-founder of Athena Sisterhood, a community of over 1.6k women, and was a teen speaker at the Global Youth Mindset Summit. She has traveled to 30+ countries, volunteered over 1,500 hours of community service, and has 7M+ views on Google Reviews. Young started her personal development journey at the age of seven and has attended Tony Robbins's Unleash your Power Within, Global Youth Leadership, Business Mastery, Leadership Academy, and Date With Destiny. When not taking a good nap, Young enjoys gourmet food, running long distance, watching award winning movies, and spending quality time with family and friends.

(Above) At the Hacienda Alsacia Starbucks Coffee Farm, LHP students learned from a tour guide about the process of growing coffee plants. Students got to see demonstrative coffee plants while learning about the beans growing their “butterfly” leaves to capture sunlight, and then eventually shedding those for their primary and maturing leaves. It can take up to four years for a newly planted coffee bean to become fruitful and ripe for production. And when it comes to the coffee cherry itself, only 20% of it is actually used for consumption.

(Above) Going vegan has been increasing in popularity over the recent years with supporters praising its health benefits, ethical standards, and contribution to the environment. This handmade cassava tortilla, made from yuca roots, sandwiches vegan cheddar cheese inside. The vegan cheese brand Violife is known for making uncanny vegan cheeses that have the same taste and cheese-pull texture as one made from cow’s milk. In the middle of the plate is a sun-dried tomato garlic spread garnished with sunflower sprouts. The entire setup is designed for a satisfying and healthy meal.

This movie won JLO her first award; she received a Best Actress award at the Golden Globe Awards. Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, contacted the director of the movie, Gregory Nava, to make a movie about Selena’s life.

Walking into Galactic G Skateshop on Orange Ave, a visitor can be met with an explosion of loud graphics, polished boards, and funky designs. (Above) Miya Okuda, grade 12, shares how she’s recently been doing two-shades on her nails. Her go-to nails are a shade of pink or blue, and anything with sparkles. This set reminded her of cherry blossoms, and she described them as, “Bright, sparkly, and fun,” adding how they reflect her personality. She would love to try storyboard nails and believes nails are really important because they, “Are one of the first things people will notice about you, especially when shaking your hand or when you’re moving.” When someone has nails as strong as these, they certainly are a great point of conversation indeed. Cottageccore is an aesthetic that incorporates a romanticized version of rural life, although more recently with a Victorian twist. This is mainly due to the popularity of shows such as Bridgerton and adaptions of Jane Austen novels. The outfits have an element of a corset, puff sleeves, and floral prints. Think about taking a garden stroll while bread is baking in the oven. Shoes can be soft leather boots and short to the ankle. Wear a straw hat for the sun and adorn with delicate jewerly. Comfort and simplicity are prioritized, whether through soft cottons or handmade accessories. As long as everything is minimalistic and intentional, it is Cottagecore. Photo by Serena Young.

The dragon dance was performed by LHP’s Chinese I and II classes in front of the Calkins Library, requiring students to build teamwork in order to learn how to walk together gracefully.
