make her beautiful vibrant art. She speaks about how she is willing to fail and not do well with a painting in order to make the best art she can.
There are around 350,000 annual visitors who attend the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival on Park Avenue. This year, 2024, marks the 65th year of the festival, which ran from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. from Friday, March 15 through Sunday, March 17. The purpose of the festival is to showcase various styles of art forms available for purchase. These art categories include drawings, pastels, digital art, clay molds, photography, paintings, and many more made by numerous different artists. Another exciting element is on March 15 at 5:30 P.M., The Landsharks (Buffet tribute band) will be performing before Micheal Andrew and Swingerhead performed at 7:30 P.M.
(Above) Derrick Crossland grew up influenced by Jacques Cousteau. As a young boy he remembered carving sharks out of bars of soap. He had a job as a craftsman and cabinetmaker, then made the decision of making sculptures as his main profession. Even after his time of being a craftsman and cabinetmaker he loved to sculpt wood and began to make his pieces out of birch and glueing pieces together to make a sculpture. His pieces are in the shapes of twists and turns that he makes himself. He explains how his work is shown and made like a pyramid, where there are many layers stacked to make the creation that he likes whether it is a five foot piece or a small piece for a home. (Tessa Guerra)(Above) Barbara Krupp’s art is meant to show a story and shares beauty with a memory or a thought. Her paintings begin with reality and will turn into her own way of abstract. Her art consists of strokes, lines, splatter, and more. She has a collection called Le Galeriste which is a collection of clothes featuring her art as well as well respected artists from around the world. The clothes are produced in Montreal (Canada). After years of making her art she been shortlisted for the Rise Art Prize in London which is a global competition for amazing artist. (Tessa Guerra)(Above) Rubén Fasani has made many peices with a potters wheel but began to make peices with traditional Japanese glazes. He works with recycled glass and also with lost wax. With many years making his art he has gotten many awards and in 2000 he achieved and became, The Grand Honor Prize of Honor President of Argentina in the National Ceramic Exhibition. With the honor of that title he has his work in many places such as private collections and also in international museums. (Tessa Guerra)(Above) Since Kina Crow was a little girl, she was extremely eager to learn how to create art. She started to attended classes at her local community art center in Los Angeles and was lucky enough to find and connect with a passionate, helpful teacher who taught her all about the art pieces of ceramics. She soon realized she was obsessed with telling stories through art, and at the age of 44, she became a working artist. Ms. Crow describes her work as, “An exploration of the abundant magic and delight that I find in being alive.” (Tessa Guerra)(Above) Marge Luttrell is an encaustic mixed media artist, from Knoxville, Tennessee. She uses a painting technique in which pigments are combined with hot liquid wax. She received her Master in Art from the University of Tennessee and is a Fulbright Scholar. Along with exhibiting her work throughout the country and winning many awards, she is also an encaustic workshop teacher at Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont, Touchstone, and many others. (Tessa Guerra)(Above) Barbara Krupp was born and raised in Elyria, a tiny city within Ohio. Ms. Krupp is a self-taught artist, who started her professional career in 1976. Influences like Graham Nickson inspired her pieces on display. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival was the seventh art festival and shows Krupp presented her different works in this year. Since starting his artistic journey, he has partnered with Jo-Ann Stores, Monopoly/HASBRO, and more. (Tessa Guerra)(Above) Robert Ross is a skilled painter based in Winter Park, Florida. Fifteen years ago, in 2008, he began painting plein-air landscapes in rural and urban environments, and later expanded to still-life and interiors. Recently, he has begun to incorporate people in moments of candid activity. Mr. Ross is interested in portals and transitional spaces in landscapes and interiors, scenes of quiet stillness, and the mystery of what he calls the commonplace. Mr. Ross says that his, “Paintings often convey a sense that something has just happened or is about to happen.” Mr. Ross also took studio courses at the Crealde School of Art in drawing with Rima Jabbur, portrait painting with Don Sondag, landscape painting with Tom Sadler, life drawing with Marie Orban, and more. Robert Ross was just recently selling his paintings at the Mainsail Art Festival, on April 20-21, 2024. This has taken place at Vinoy Park, St. Petersburg, Florida. Here, in booth 103, Mr. Ross won an Award of Distinction, which he recently shared a picture of on his Instagram with the caption stating the following: “Award of Distinction. Thanks, Mainsail. A good start to day two. Looking forward to seeing you in booth No. 103.” (Tessa Guerra)
Tessa Guerra is the Director of Advertising for Lake Highland Preparatory School's Upper School Newspaper Twice-Told Tale. She is also the co-founder and President of the Mental Health Awareness Club. Tessa has been at Lake Highland for seven years and will graduate in May of 2025. Her hobbies include writing, reading, babysitting, cooking, and more. As Tessa spends her second/last year on the newspaper staff, she looks forward to writing and publishing thoughtful, quality articles and supporting her team.
Elizabeth Rudd is an eleventh grade student at Lake Highland Preparatory School. She has been at Lake Highland since fourth grade playing soccer, tennis, track, and cheer. She has been a part of the newspaper staff for two years, and plans on continuing for her last year at Lake Highland in the year to come. Besides newspaper, she exceeds in math and science. Elizabeth is also on the head staff for the clubs, Jewish Student Union and Kindness for Kids. In both of her clubs she plans for community service and big events. She plans on going to the University of Miami for college while also playing tennis, following the alumni in her family.
