(Above) Because of the widespread use of plastic, it is impossible to completely remove it from our diet, but it is possible to stop some of the consumption. Fruits and vegetables absorb plastics through roots which go into the plant. A study by Gea Oliveri Conti, PhD, found that apples and carrots have the highest concentration of plastics. Both are very healthy, but finding alternatives might stop more plastic consumption.

Mattamy Homes is building the population of the houses and areas continues to grow driven by factors like its warm climate and economic opportunities. This has led to a surge in demand for new homes. Unfortunately, this growth often comes at the expense of Florida’s ecosystems. The green that everyone knows Florida has is slowly disappearing under the sand and bricks of the homes with no social connection. The house market has exploded, and to be fair, it was in a reasonable way. The houses are selling higher than what they were originally listed at, but somewhere in the owner feels bad taking away everything that isn’t there.

(Above) After Operation Homecoming, Mary Jane McManus reunited with her husband Kevin J. McManus in Honolulu after being separated for over five years on February 22, 1973. Holding back tears, Mary Jane was able to look at her husband, knowing he was now safe. Reporters were desperate to know what had happened in those five years. Mr. McManus would share his journey with reporters, citizens, and schools. He mentioned to Mary Jane that all the class boys would frequently ask about the tortures. Mr. McManus was said to have been struggling to contain his laughter as the boys would try to come up with their methods to use against prisoners. Although McManus went through thick and thin, he still loved to share his experience.

(Above) The Senate held a weekend session in the Capitol Building. Located in Washington, D.C., the Capitol Building attracts three to five million visitors from around the world each year. Its North Wing holds Senate meetings, while its South Wing holds House of Representatives meetings. Last year, Lake Highland’s Young Democrats club held a voter registration drive, and this year’s voter registration drive will begin on September ninth. After that, Aleena Reddy plans to get students involved in the election through phone-banking and letter-writing. Prateek Seela, grade 12, will be helping coordinate training for volunteering at polling precincts.

(Above) Beck Tews, grade 11, demonstrates how he does his backhand while instructing the athletes on how to get the perfect form. Tews said, “I enjoy teaching tennis to the younger kids at LHP. It’s always good to show the kids new skills and making them try something new. So in the future, hopefully they will stick with it and love it as much as I do.” After talking to the athletes they started to follow his instructions after watching an example of what to copy. With more practice the athletes began to finally under- stand the importance of coordination whether it is playing together or just practicing by themselves. Learning with a bounce drop from the coaches, which is thrown directly in front of them for practice to be able to start their warm ups and get ready for the rest of practice.

(Above) While the Pride is one of only three professional women’s sports teams in Florida, it isn’t the last. With Orlando Pride, the USSSA Pride, Florida’s professional softball team, has inspired young women in the state to pursue their athletic careers after their establishment in 2009. This is seen by the addition of the Orlando Valkyries, a professional volleyball team, that started their first season in January. Similarly, the United Soccer League is starting the first season of their Division I Super League (USLS) this coming August, with two Florida soccer teams joining—Fort Lauderdale United FC and Tampa Bay Sun FC—and teams from Jacksonville and Palm Beach joining USLS in 2025.

Lively has also recently been stating that her costar and director, Justin Baldoni, has been fat-shaming her. According to Lively, there was a scene where Ryle (Baldoni) had to pick Lily (Lively) up. Bandoni allegedly had lasting back issues, therefore, he enquired with the on-set trainer how much she weighed so that he could prepare for the scene. Lively also contributed to the main song of the movie. The song title was “My Tears Ricochet” by Taylor Swift. Blake and Taylor are very close friends in real life, so Blake wanted to contribute to her in the movie.

She found her passion for writing for the newspaper because of the hit TV series Gilmore Girls. Getting the chance to design layouts, and the opportunities the class offers, are her favorite things that come with being on the newspaper staff. Emily wants to continue finding and exploring new passions and writing. Beyond school, she loves to travel, be with friends, write, and frequently visit New York.

Being a wrestler is a lifestyle of dedication and commitment, and it doesn’t come easy. “Traveling, making weight, competing, doing homework at the airport during a delayed flight, getting back Monday morning at 1:00 A.M., and then showing up to school the same day. It’s a grind,” Omer Barak, grade 12 said. Yet, he loves the sport because of the, “Sacrifice it entails, and the dedication…and the hard work you put in shows. There’s no hiding.” This hard-won relationship of devotion is clearly echoed throughout the team. Yes, it’s hard, but that’s exactly what wrestlers love about it. In this spirit, it becomes more than just wrestling. It’s tackling and growing from valuable life lessons.

Entrepreneurs of locally owned businesses can apply to the Business Assistance Program (BAP) which will help with costs such as relocation fees. Specifically, the grant matches the small business in fees giving an even split. The BAP targets businesses that strive to produce thriving businesses and in turn, helps by matching costs up to $20,000, illustrating just one way the economy encourages the creation of small businesses. By doing so, this conveys that consumers should support their favorite locally-owned shop too.

(Above) From high in the sky, travelers are able to see all across the city. Though most likely only recognize famous landmarks such as the Empire State Building, and Freedom Tower, the bright shining lights are simply a ghastly sight to see. Though these shining lights aren’t just any random buildings, they represent many neighborhoods yet to be explored and visited that local New Yorkers call home. As mentioned before, Chelsea is one of those prominent neighborhoods. With an amazing community, excellent shopping center, entertaining markets, and mouth-wateringly good food, Chelsea is a great place to spend time. The Chelsea community would best be described as creative, originally made from factories, and now modern-day living spaces, Chelsea’s character is artistically unmatched. The neighborhood’s most popular shopping district is Chelsea’s Market located on Ninth Avenue and West 16th Street. The building stands tall made from classic brick with its large sign standing tall for all to see. Throughout the market, people will find restaurants, bakeries, clothing stores, and much more.

Liam Szubinski, grade 10, said, “I think dressing up as their vibe is better. Also you need accessories...,” he continues to say how he might choose to dress. Although some people don’t like the idea of dressing up as a music artist at all. Gates Valines, grade 10, said, “No I don’t like the idea of dressing up as your favorite music artist for Halloween because that’s odd.”

This year Cherry Red has become a prominent color in Fall fashion, and H&M received the message. Along with the normal Fall muted colors red has popped up again, and again. The store is offering a wide variety of Fall fashions and offers Cherry Red while also sticking to the classics. The classic of Fall include jeans, sweaters, so more sweaters, and a whole lot of...did it mention sweaters? H&M is offering sweaters in all colors from muted browns to the favorite deep cherry red of the season. The store has taken the 2023 Fall season trends and has used them well. With so many options though to choose from, there is the question of “What should I and shouldn’t I buy?” That’s a very reasonable question and one with a very quick and easy answer. The skill needed people need to know is what they like, and take the Fall trends and mold them with their own style. That's the best way to wear Fall fashion. H&M has an extensive selection of clothes but there are other places to look for more Fall fashion.

Bath and Body Works offers countless seasonal scents of candles, shower gels, and lotions. One way to fully be embraced by Fall is to capture every experience through all five senses including smell. Candles not only fill the room with delicious seasonal scents but always set a cozy ambiance perfect for reading, doing homework, or simply a cozy night in. Fall is the season to romanticize life and to capitalize on looking at things differently. It makes mundane tasks all the more enjoyable, and Fall is no different. That’s why simply having the smell of freshly baked cinnamon rolls, pumpkin spice, or coffee is such a game-changer to the average day. With candles, it’s possible to experience places through smell, and while traveling or going out for coffee is something everyone loves to enjoy, there’s not always time in the day or money to spend. Candles transport people to places and just make everything better, they are so aesthetically Fall that it’s impossible not to be effected by their smell!

(Left) Sublime, Pink Floyd, Nirva- na, Blink-182, ACDC, and many more bands have been constants in rock cul- ture. With the rise of trends in social media, these bands are experiencing a “different” look. Now with a total spin-off of what used to be worn for metalheads all have turned into pink, sunny, and most of all preppy looks. The preppy aesthetics latest and may- be even most popular trend is wearing a pink smiley face crewneck found in Urban Outfi tters. The sweatshirt screams preppy from a mile away, but knowing its background would surprise anyone. The sweatshirt originates from the band Nirvana. Back in its prime and even now it would describe anything but preppy. Instead, Nirva- na was named a grunge alternative rock band. Their part in rock and roll culture was great, making grunge alternative rock popular along with Pearl Jam. Making the connection between what’s on the t-shirt and what it represents is a bit jarring. Of course, the infl uence behind the t-shirt was the decades before and how they are impacting fashion today. After that, stores started rolling out all different t-shirts that include many of the bands previously men- tioned. Another sweatshirt was made from one of the most recognizable band logos for Sublime. Many do not recognize the logo for the band but simply the design since it is still wide- ly popular. As a very popular band, the Sublime t-shirt design has shown up on t-shirts and has been around for decades to be recognized in many different places. Though again not always in this exact way.

(Above) The Fright Nights event offers countless options for each and every customer’s enjoyment. The Zipper is just one example of the rides that are offered at the Fright Nights event. The event is for everyone; and is perfect for hanging out with friends or heading out with the family. The activities that are offered are so fun and exciting. The feeling around the events is very uplifting and spooky. Even if Fright Nights isn’t for you, there are many other events in West Palm Beach. For the holiday seasons, some other events include Old Northwood 34th Annual Candlelight Home Tour, Pop-Up Holiday Bazaar, Christmas Day Holiday, 32nd Annual Holiday Craft Fair, and more. One event, in particular, sticking to the North- wood theme, The Winter Market in West Palm Beach is hosted on Saturday, December 17. The event is exciting and just one of the few events that attracts everyone.

Zane Rimes, grade 10, explained, “When I got to do the seven-night stay at Disney after my battle with cancer, we had a special room at Disney, and I got to cut to the front of the lines at any ride at all of the parks.
