When Stranger Things returned for its fifth and final season at the end of November 2025, it marked the conclusion of one of the most successful and influential television shows of the streaming era. The eight episodes (which were released in two separate volumes ending in a New Year’s Eve Finale) have brought the decade-long story of the city of Hawkins to an end. This finale has generated a significant amount of discussion and debate across social media and among Stranger Things fans.
Overall, Season Five was a major success for Stranger Things as the scores amongst critics were mainly positive. Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval score of 83% on the Tomatometer. Metacritic also categorized the reviews for Season Five of Stranger Things as “Generally favorable.” Many reviewers and critics praised the show’s emotional weight, production choices, and the sense of closure that Season Five offered for the entirety of the show.
On the other hand, the audience reported much more mixed reviews regarding the new season. Rotten Tomatoes reported a rating of 53% on the Popcornmeter, which is a metric measuring the audience’s score symbolized by a popcorn bucket. Some viewers reflected an overall satisfaction with the growth the show experienced over nearly a decade, while others were more critical of the show’s pacing and overall creativity. Some fans were disappointed with how the episodes flow together and reported how the final season seemed very rushed. Viewers also felt that the larger cast seemed overpopulated with too many characters, which they believed was too overwhelming to keep up with. Stranger Things seemed to lose the element of specializing in a select number of well-developed characters with significant buildup relevant to the storyline. Fans felt the new season kept the characters’ depth on a shallower level due to the “Overcrowding” of insignificant new roles, which depleted the “Expressiveness” within the main cast. Other fans speculate that Netflix had cut down on each episode’s running time due to them being too lengthy, but such rumors have been confirmed as false by the Duffer Brothers. Cast members also denied viral fan theories about major cuts to Stranger Things: Season Five. On social rating platforms, critics tend to score the final season much higher than the general audience, with considerable gaps between professional reviews and user ratings.
Surprisingly, Season Five ranked as the lowest-rated season with the lowest viewer satisfaction and critical rate. The expectations for Season Five were very high, with the assumption that the finale would tie the series together in an exceptional, exciting way. According to multiple sources, Season One was rated the “Best” season of Stranger Things, maintaining the highest critical rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Season Four ranked in second place following Season One with a critical rating of 89%, which also sustained the inflated expectations for Season Five.
As the series came to an end, many cast members and creators spoke openly about their experiences. Many interviews and behind-the-scenes footage reveal the challenging process of making the finale. A significant challenge the Duffer Brothers faced in releasing the final season was a series of obstacles that delayed them from series production and release. The 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes, along with the 2023 Hollywood strikes (WGA and SAG-AFTRA), also delayed the increased production scale. The Duffers were unable to continue writing the script for Season Five due to the writers’ strike, which had a major impact on the season. These challenging circumstances demanded longer episodes and increased budgets, which caused Matt and Ross Duffer to have an extended creative process for Season Five. They described the season’s production as their most challenging production yet.
Cast members and actors were openly positive and expressed gratitude for the final moments of Stranger Things. Actors like Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, David Harbour, and Winona Ryder have expressed their gratitude and emotional attachment to the show. Saying goodbye to the cast was hard and bittersweet.
Despite it being the final closing of the show, Season Five opened doors for some of the actors who played major roles in the finale. Actors like Nell Fisher, Priah Ferguson, and Jake Connelly gained more attention from the media this season, despite being new members of the cast. Among the cast members who experienced a wave in recognition as a result of Season Five, Jamie Campbell Bower (the actor of Vecna/Henry Creel/001) stood above the rest. Even though several stand-out actors experienced the same increased visibility, Bower emerged as one of Season Five’s most applauded and widely discussed performances. This generated major discourse amongst fans regarding the fact that he greatly surpassed his previous appearance in Season Four. In previous roles, Jamie Campbell Bower mainly played smaller, less dramatic roles in fantasy movies (such as Harry Potter and Twilight), but Season Five of Stranger Things pushed him to the center of attention, with many calling his performance one of the most memorable of the season. Even though core cast members and actors like Millie Bobby Brown, Noah Schnapp, and Finn Wolfhard regained attention this season, their previous background and prior history on Stranger Things had already earned them a significant amount of fame in the early stages of their careers, making Season Five merely a “reminder” of their initial popularity.
Even as the main story of Hawkins concludes, there are many speculations about what is to come next and what has already begun. Industry observers and supporters of the show alike have debated whether or not Netflix will expand the Stranger Things universe through prequels, spin-offs, or related projects or series. An animated series of Stranger Things, Tales From ’85, has already been confirmed and is currently in the making. The show is set in the winter of 1985, with its timeline being placed between Season Two and Season Three of the original Stranger Things. It will feature animated versions of already familiar characters, like Eleven, Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and more. The show also faces new monsters and mysterious events, creating a similar story yet a much different plot that veers more towards the adventurous side rather than the original horror series. Tales From ’85 is also directed towards a younger age group, minimizing the graphic gore and intense violence that Stranger Things displays on screen.
Some reports suggest that at least one live-action spin-off is already in development, which would veer away from Hawkins and the main set of characters while still maintaining a connection to the same storyline and overall lore of Stranger Things. Some rumors amongst the media suggest that the speculated spin-off is more focused on the character Nancy Wheeler as the centerpiece. The approach of creating a separate series or sub-sect of Stranger Things allows for the original story to be untouched and finalized while still creating expansions to the fantasy. This idea follows a larger trend in the television industry, where highly successful shows, like Stranger Things, are seen to extend through relating storylines rather than releasing direct sequels or continuations of the original development. Given the global popularity and long-lasting viewer engagement, many agree that branching storylines of the show would be most appropriate for the continued growth of Stranger Things, making the original series only the beginning of their potential journey to come.
