Ignorance Threatens Animal Welfare

(Above) As with most types of injustice and trauma, the first thing affected is the brain. As women place constrictions on themselves about how they should speak and act, they fight against the part of themselves that sees themselves as equal to both men, but also other women. Furthermore, the contradictions placed on women add a layer of complexity. In young women particularly, as they see how different women act in scenarios, both parties second guess their choices, not realizing that they are trying meet a standard that is difficult to fit within. This causes a lack of self-confidence and heighted anxienty, which can lead to even more consequences.

(Above) So much of the modern world is visual. Poetry doesn’t have to come through just black and white letters on a page; it can dance in swirls and color too. Through this poetry collage, there can be seen contemperorary poets such as Ocean Vuong and Louise Glück. There are 19th and 20th century poets such as Maya Angelou and Emily Dickinson. And of course, there is the newest brand of one-line poetry popularized by Atticus, a pseudonym for a poet who remains anonymous. There is still a whole world of poets and poetry to explore beyond the frames of this one collective photograph. The following list of additional poets I would personally recommend is by no means comprehensive: K-Ming Chang, Ross Gay, Hanif Abdurraqib, Victoria Chang, Sonia Sanchez, Sylvia Plath, T.S. Eliot, Percy Shelley, and William Wordsworth.

(Above) Double standards exist beyond gender roles. A wonderful resource about this topic is the blog Modcast, where English Literature and Language graduate students discuss various novels. In fact, the blog has a section called “Hypocritcisms: Double Standards in Literature,” which is dedicated to various types of conflicting ideals faced by people from all communities. This goes to shows that despite the wonderful steps made to equalize things for various groups, conversations are still happening and progress must continue.

(Above) The cosmetic industry plays a significant role in fueling ageism by perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards and promoting products that promise to reverse or prevent the signs of aging. Many companies within this industry capitalize on societys obsession with youth, often employing marketing tactics that reinforce ageist stereotypes. For instance, beauty brands like LOréal have come under scrutiny for campaigns that seemingly celebrate older women but still emphasize their products anti-aging properties. Similarly, companies like Estée Lauder market their products with phrases like turn back the clock and age-defying, further contributing to the notion that aging is something to be feared and avoided at all costs. Like plastic surgery, topical remedies for aging won’t transform you. Billion-dollar companies aren’t dedicated to making the world look younger. They’re preying on easy insecurities, and we fall for it every time. In 2021, the global anti-aging market was estimated to be worth about 62.6 billion U.S. dollars according to Statistica, and this number is expected to increase significantly in the next few years.

My initial thought was that it was a fantastic example of an edge or satellite city, a whole new city center popping up orbiting Downtown Orlando, explained Mr. Nathan Johnston. (Above) Despite Orlando’s heat, the biggest asset of the city for the marathroners was how flat the course was. Athletes began right off of Amelia Avenue with a 2.2 mile loop through the business district, did three 8.8 miles loops through the Milk District, and finished at Lake Eola. The run included long, flat, straight stretches which gave athletes a more even playing field.

Because of the range of flavors that hit your taste buds from the cold sauce, raw fish, sticky rice, and more, it is one of my favorite types of foods to eat. At the Green Coast Resort, located in Albania, this is one of the dishes they serve. From Turkish and American to Albanian and Japanese, these offered cuisines are high in quality, and indescribable in taste.

Being a wrestler is a lifestyle of dedication and commitment, and it doesn’t come easy. “Traveling, making weight, competing, doing homework at the airport during a delayed flight, getting back Monday morning at 1:00 A.M., and then showing up to school the same day. It’s a grind,” Omer Barak, grade 12 said. Yet, he loves the sport because of the, “Sacrifice it entails, and the dedication…and the hard work you put in shows. There’s no hiding.” This hard-won relationship of devotion is clearly echoed throughout the team. Yes, it’s hard, but that’s exactly what wrestlers love about it. In this spirit, it becomes more than just wrestling. It’s tackling and growing from valuable life lessons.

The culture is very diverse in Turkey as is the cuisine–we have our own recipes, but they are all heavily influenced by tradition.” The appetizer dishes ordered along with Turkish Coffee adding on to the mood. The coffee itself is an experience as it is the definition of a traditional Turkish coffee.

(Above) The Regal Movie Theater in Oviedo Mall is a local staple whenever the latest movies drop, especially during the summer season when locals need a break from the scorching hot sun. Before COVID-19, the theater was mildly busy, and ever since the end of the pandemic, the theater has not regained that popularity. The best time to go to the Regal Movie Theater in Oviedo Mall is Tuesdays since that is when they have the best deals on ticket prices and popcorn. Shoppers can pair their day with a movie and snack to enhance their experience at Oviedo Mall. In the past, the Oviedo Mall has offered rental space on Sundays for local church groups such as the Palmwood Church. Growing up around the Oviedo Mall my entire life has given me more than a decade to form my opinion on the movie theater. Although the theater has not gotten many updates, it remains to have great service, great snacks, great drinks, comfortable seats, the movies we are excited to see, and good memories are always made.

This Italian restaurant is located in Telluride, Colorado. Inside there is a variety of well-made Italian foods where it is so clear that they put so much effort into every dish. The food is so good that it tastes like it’s from Italy. The servers and the staff are all so welcoming and kind it makes guests want to come back. It is open from lunch to dinner and is an easy place if you need a place to eat during a long day of skiing. Above the restaurant there is a gondola which brings residents and visitors into town, shops, and so much more.

(Above) The inspiration that Star Wars took from Dune is so clear after watching the film. There is the first obvious parallel between the countless desert planets of the George Lucas films, most famously Anakin Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine and Dune’s desert planet of Arrakis. Then there’s the advanced physical and psychological manipulation capabilities of the Bene Gesserit, a skill they call “the Voice that mirrors the body and mind control called “the Force” that Jedis possess. Both have evil emperors ruling the galaxy, strong brother-sister ties at the center of their stories, and a powerful drug called “the spice” as a popular commodity. There are also tremendous differences. While Star Wars mainly focuses on smugglers and rebels, Dune is a story about feudal aristocracy. It dives into the complex questions of using religion as a tool for politics and the limits of human capability. Star Wars, on the other hand, can seem more like a fairy tale in comparison. It has a greater emphasis on spirituality, with Luke saving the galaxy by saving his father’s soul, and in this vein, it is fundamentally more optimistic.

Manager Mehr Ohri, grade 10, who has only just become a basketball manager this year, says, “My favorite part of being a manager for the basketball team is getting to sit on the bench and watch the home games, especially the ones that we win.” Mehr along with her fellow managers help the players throughout the game by handing out water as well.

(Above) Terms like “Humanely Raised” or “Simply Made” might be the most pointless. The USDA will allow of the label “Humanely Raised” to completely be defined by the producer. This process essentially authorizes this phrase for any chicken company that wants to use it. Terms like “Simple” or “Simply Made” hold zero value as well. This term does not have to be checked or verified by the USDA at all, making it just another insignificant word that gets slapped on packaging for the illusion of health.

(Above) One of the volunteers at E.S.T.H.E.R. taught a Highlander how to correctly fill the pantries up for the mothers to receive later on in the week. Later everyone joined in to help with the food. After this section of the activities, everybody moved to the second room where the volunteers made paper flowers to attach to the goodie bags, which include a variety of snack for the children. These bags included a variety of snacks to cheer them up, including chips, cookies, and more. When the children receive these bags, they give hope and comfort that some of them dont get to experience too often. This is why E.S.T.H.E.R. wants every task performed to a volunteers best effort.

(Above) As simple as it may seem, the origination of the name “pho” is actually more complicated and uncertain than most may think. It is debated that the name actually stems from French vocabulary, as “feu” in French means fire, and this word is used in the name of a French beef stew called “pot-au-feu.” As well as Pho, this is also a dish consisting of broth, beef, and vegetables. Seeing as the French colonized Vietnam starting in the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, the theory isn’t completely unbelievable. Other people argue that the name “pho” came from the name of a different brothy dish that Cantonese street vendors sold in Vietnam called “nguu nhục phấn,” which means, “Beef with rice noodles.” It is thought that the name became more and more shortened and simplified over time, at one point turning in to “phấn”, and eventually resulting in the simple name of “pho.”

The opening shot of Willy Wonka sailing into town was filmed in Lyme Regis, Dorset, a place inspired by Meryl Streep’s 1981 romance, The French Lieutenant’s Woman. However, to get the non-descript European city scenes, production had to build the sets from scratch. Head production designer, Nathan Crowley noted, “You conclude that you kind of want to build your own place because you’re trying to achieve, as I call it, ‘Roald Dahl realism,’ which is fantasy but on all his terms.”

Emily Cypher, grade 10, is the Copy Editor of Lake Highland Preparatory School’s, Upper School newspaper, the Twice-Told Tale. She found her passion for Newspaper from the iconic show Gilmore Girls, which aired in the 2000s. After reading more books than anyone could count, her passion for writing grew even bigger, as she is currently exploring creative writing as well. The staff and the opportunities that come with being part of the paper are what she enjoys most about being a member of the Twice-Told Tale staff. Emily continues exploring new passions with writing and beyond. Outside of school, she plays volleyball at Game Point Volleyball Club as a libero. Her commitment to the sport helps her time management skills grow along with her ability to be flexible. Emily loves to travel and visits New York as much as she can, and she is excited to push herself to learn new things.

(Above) Malakor Thai Cafe is located in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Thai cafe offers locals and tourists the chance to travel around the world with their taste buds while exploring all new flavors. With Thai staples such as Thai tea and red bean everything, the restaurant is top tier, with a 4.6 star rating on Google. On the cafe’s website, malakor.com, it describes the meaning behind its name stating, “Malakor means ‘papaya,’ a Thai kitchen staple.“ The restaurant includes the fruit in many of its dishes, offering a wide variety of menu items. Malakor is a must stop, and the perfect place to sit down and grab a bite to eat.

Entrepreneurs of locally owned businesses can apply to the Business Assistance Program (BAP) which will help with costs such as relocation fees. Specifically, the grant matches the small business in fees giving an even split. The BAP targets businesses that strive to produce thriving businesses and in turn, helps by matching costs up to $20,000, illustrating just one way the economy encourages the creation of small businesses. By doing so, this conveys that consumers should support their favorite locally-owned shop too.

(Above) From high in the sky, travelers are able to see all across the city. Though most likely only recognize famous landmarks such as the Empire State Building, and Freedom Tower, the bright shining lights are simply a ghastly sight to see. Though these shining lights aren’t just any random buildings, they represent many neighborhoods yet to be explored and visited that local New Yorkers call home. As mentioned before, Chelsea is one of those prominent neighborhoods. With an amazing community, excellent shopping center, entertaining markets, and mouth-wateringly good food, Chelsea is a great place to spend time. The Chelsea community would best be described as creative, originally made from factories, and now modern-day living spaces, Chelsea’s character is artistically unmatched. The neighborhood’s most popular shopping district is Chelsea’s Market located on Ninth Avenue and West 16th Street. The building stands tall made from classic brick with its large sign standing tall for all to see. Throughout the market, people will find restaurants, bakeries, clothing stores, and much more.

Liam Szubinski, grade 10, said, “I think dressing up as their vibe is better. Also you need accessories...,” he continues to say how he might choose to dress. Although some people don’t like the idea of dressing up as a music artist at all. Gates Valines, grade 10, said, “No I don’t like the idea of dressing up as your favorite music artist for Halloween because that’s odd.”

(Above) H&M has become a place to find fashionable pieces at a reasonable price, and this season’s no different. This year Cherry Red has become a prominent color in Fall fashion, and H&M received the message. Along with the normal Fall muted colors red has popped up again, and again. The store is offering a wide variety of Fall fashions and offers Cherry Red while also sticking to the classics. The classic of Fall include jeans, sweaters, so more sweaters, and a whole lot of...did it mention sweaters? H&M is offering sweaters in all colors from muted browns to the favorite deep cherry red of the season. The store has taken the 2023 Fall season trends and has used them well. With so many options though to choose from, there is the question of “What should I and shouldn’t I buy?” That’s a very reasonable question and one with a very quick and easy answer. The skill needed people need to know is what they like, and take the Fall trends and mold them with their own style. Thats the best way to wear Fall fashion. H&M has an extensive selection of clothes but there are other places to look for more Fall fashion.

(Left) Sublime, Pink Floyd, Nirva- na, Blink-182, ACDC, and many more bands have been constants in rock cul- ture. With the rise of trends in social media, these bands are experiencing a “different” look. Now with a total spin-off of what used to be worn for metalheads all have turned into pink, sunny, and most of all preppy looks. The preppy aesthetics latest and may- be even most popular trend is wearing a pink smiley face crewneck found in Urban Outfi tters. The sweatshirt screams preppy from a mile away, but knowing its background would surprise anyone. The sweatshirt originates from the band Nirvana. Back in its prime and even now it would describe anything but preppy. Instead, Nirva- na was named a grunge alternative rock band. Their part in rock and roll culture was great, making grunge alternative rock popular along with Pearl Jam. Making the connection between what’s on the t-shirt and what it represents is a bit jarring. Of course, the infl uence behind the t-shirt was the decades before and how they are impacting fashion today. After that, stores started rolling out all different t-shirts that include many of the bands previously men- tioned. Another sweatshirt was made from one of the most recognizable band logos for Sublime. Many do not recognize the logo for the band but simply the design since it is still wide- ly popular. As a very popular band, the Sublime t-shirt design has shown up on t-shirts and has been around for decades to be recognized in many different places. Though again not always in this exact way.

(Above) The Fright Nights event offers countless options for each and every customer’s enjoyment. The Zipper is just one example of the rides that are offered at the Fright Nights event. The event is for everyone; and is perfect for hanging out with friends or heading out with the family. The activities that are offered are so fun and exciting. The feeling around the events is very uplifting and spooky. Even if Fright Nights isn’t for you, there are many other events in West Palm Beach. For the holiday seasons, some other events include Old Northwood 34th Annual Candlelight Home Tour, Pop-Up Holiday Bazaar, Christmas Day Holiday, 32nd Annual Holiday Craft Fair, and more. One event, in particular, sticking to the North- wood theme, The Winter Market in West Palm Beach is hosted on Saturday, December 17. The event is exciting and just one of the few events that attracts everyone.

Zane Rimes, grade 10, explained, “When I got to do the seven-night stay at Disney after my battle with cancer, we had a special room at Disney, and I got to cut to the front of the lines at any ride at all of the parks.
